What is Blanket Insulation?

Blanket Insulation 101
Blanket insulation comes in either batts or rolls. It can be used to insulate walls, flooring, and ceilings. The pre-fabricated panels are designed to fit snuggly between studs, beams, and floor joists. Blanket insulation works well in easily accessible areas
Blanket insulation can be made out of several materials. It is most commonly made of fiberglass or mineral wood (either slag wool or rock wool). Fiberglass blanket insulation is affordable and relatively easy to install, as no special equipment is typically required. Some batted and rolled insulation is also made of natural fibers (like cotton) and plastic fibers.
Batted vs. Rolled
Batts are typically cut to fit both the width and height of a particular area. They are usually just wide enough to fit the standard dimensions between the studs and just tall enough to accommodate 8 or 9 foot ceilings. Insulation rolls also come in several standard widths, but in much longer lengths. The rolls are designed to insulate longer areas like attics and floors. One particular section can be covered by a continuous length of insulation, rather than several batts that have been pieced together.

Faced or Unfaced?
Some blanket insulation comes with a paper or radiant foil facing. The facing acts as a vapor barrier to help prevent moisture accumulation. Additionally, the facing can easily be stapled to joists and studs. Blanket insulation without a facing is generally held in place by friction alone. It is important that the insulation fits properly in wall cavities or floor spaces in order to ensure its effectiveness.
